Veteran's Day, November 11, 2011

In memory of the many hundreds of veterans who made this world a safer place to be I am writing this to insure that the one most revered by me is mentioned. On a cold snowy morning in 1945 my mommy dressed me in a new sailor suit trimmed in red. I was two! We ate breakfast with my grand parents, and after I had my hands washed up, and the butter wiped off my chin mommy said, “yes, you can wait for your dad on the porch.”
He was supposed to arrive early. A lite snow was falling, the sky was cloudy, and still very dark for a little boy two. Dad did arrive after three or four trips inside, and a cup or two of hot chocolate. I was so thrilled. Dad was a handsome man, of course for a boy of two he was tall. Mommy said he was good looking. Stories were told, hugs were given, gifts exchanged, it was Christmas time. Then, daddy went back to the war. Everybody cried, like I am now. It was two whole years later, half of my life time then, that my grand paw, and some uncles built my mommy a house across the road from grand paws. There was a knock on the door. The young Army officer standing there said he had a letter from the President of the United States. My mommy broke down, and after a spell, received the envelope and the salute from the young officer. Before she was seated to open it, it was covered in tears. 66 years later the tears stream down my face as I recall this vivid memory. The next memory was the twenty one gun salute fired over my fathers grave. Be good to our veterans coming home!

I suppose everyone has been out in the yard today pruning your fig tree? No, you should try it some times. The only thing I know about the job is that it was too big, and it had to come down a notch. I canned 23 jars of fig preservers this summer. They taste great.
This morning started at 5:30 a m and my first e-mail stated that my work was not up to par and that I have to completely re-write my manuscript. Boomer! My next action was to order the book, Techniques of the selling Writer, by Dwight Swain. I bought it. Do you know "Structure?" Well, that's what I have to master. It sounds hard after the first bit of review I did. I've yet to read Mr. Swain's book, but my 1961 Prentice Hall Handbook For Writers gives some very tough views of how too. Also they devote 4 pages of a 589 page book to the term structure. I don't know, this could be even harder.
I have been writing seriously for over 7 years and during that time have spent at least 7 hours per day, five day a week. During that time I have never heard the first word about structure until an editor reviewed one of my manuscripts and said I had to change my ways. Then, of all things an author friend of mine agreed with the editor. Some days you just are glad the coffee was good for breakfast.
Another time, another review!

November 3rd, 2011, Life on the Lake

I rose this morning with a strong desire to write this blog. Right! The reason I was up was to work on my manuscript. The manuscript has only been reworked a bazillion times. You know how it is, when you write it the first time it sounds great. Go back and hour later and you wonder who has been at your computer while you were gone.
I have had the distinct pleasure of completing my first novel which will be ready for print around the fist of the year. The title is “Bottom Bones.” I started writing it in 2007 and worked at it until just recently when Create Space decided to publish it. It will be available on Amazon as well as the publisher’s web site and mine through a link to either one. I am posting the first chapter on my web site and I would love to have your opinion. Follow the comment link to respond.
Thanks folks, I hope to be able to write again tomorrow. Good night for now.
